What grades does SMCS offer & what is a typical class size?
SMCS educates students in grades early childhood - eighth. Class sizes range from 12-25 students.
Is tuition assistance available?
Tuition assistance is available to qualified families. The process for determining tuition assistance is fair and confidential and run entirely through our business office.
Is the school accredited?
Yes, SMCS is fully accredited through the Michigan Non-public Schools Accrediting Association.
What are the school hours & is there an after-school care program?
Half day hours: 7:50 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Full day hours: 7:50 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. After School Care: 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. ($3/hr. per child - must be 4 yrs old) $5 will be charged for every minute after 5:30 p.m.
Do students attend Mass?
Students attend morning Mass on Wednesdays for our All School Mass. Students in grades 2-8 attend an additional Mass as a grade level division. Parents, grandparents, and friends are always welcome to worship with us!
Do students have to be Catholic to attend SMCS?
No, they do not. SMCS is a Catholic school, however, we welcome students of all faiths who desire a rigorous education in a Christ-centered environment.
Do students have outdoor recess?
Outdoor recess, 25 minutes, is provided daily for students in grades early childhood - eight. Students in early childhood and kindergarten may participate in additional recess times.
Does St. Monica offer a hot lunch program?
Our daily hot lunch program meets the Federal Lunch Guidelines. Milk orders, for those students who bring their own lunch, are also available on a monthly basis.
Does the school have a dress code?
Students are required to wear uniforms and follow our uniform policy. Uniforms are to be purchased through Flynn O’Hara. Gently used uniforms are also available through our uniform closet.
Is bus transportation available?
Bus transportation is available, in the morning and afternoon, for our students who reside in the boundaries of either the Kalamazoo or Portage Public Schools.
What Specials Classes are taught?
Art, Gym, Music, Spanish, Library, Technology and Band are our specials classes. All Specials are taught K-8, with the exception of Band, which is optional for 6-8th.
Does St. Monica offer athletics?
St. Monica Athletics include Basketball for 6th, 7th & 8th grade boys and girls (separate seasons), as well as Volleyball for middle school girls. Middle School Boys’ & Girls’ Soccer, Cross Country & Track are also available through CSGK Unified Sports. After-school golf, bowling & archery opportunities are offered to our students as well through Kalamazoo Parks & Recreation.
What kind of extra-curricular groups are available?
Student Council, Middle School Thespian Society, Life Runners, and Book Challenge are after-school opportunities for interested students, to name a few! After-school clubs vary from year to year and new (volunteer-run) clubs are always welcome!
